Beginning with the 1930s, the principal theme of contemporary life treated by Sassu is the café. The café is a typical place in the social life of a modern city; in the Milan of the 1930s as in Paris, which the artist knew well, it was also the meeting place of artists, intellectuals, and poets. Sassu frequently drew or took graphic notes seated in his favorite cafés, capturing fragments of real life, persons, situations. The sketches made on this motif, sometimes only summarily outlined, were then later taken again in hand, rethought, and reworked, until they were translated into painting on canvas. The artist’s first work on this subject is the interior presented here, with three figures in tranquil conversation seated at a table, and a dog.
